What is this Retrofit Device and How Does It Work?

The device is called a Retrofit Emission-Control Device, or RECD. In simple terms, it works like a giant air purifier for a vehicle's exhaust pipe. When a diesel engine runs, it releases dirty smoke filled with dangerous particles. The RECD catches these pollutants before they escape into the air.

The science behind it is highly effective. According to details shared by the minister, the RECD can reduce particulate matter emissions by up to 90%. It also cuts down nitrogen oxide emissions by around 60%. Dirty exhaust goes into the device, and much cleaner air comes out on the other side. This technology has already been used to clean up diesel generators, and now it is ready for the road.

An Affordable Option for Truck and Bus Owners

Buying a brand-new, eco-friendly vehicle is very expensive. For many small business owners and truck drivers, it is simply not possible. This is where the IIT Delhi invention becomes a game-changer. The retrofit device is expected to cost only between Rs 4,000 and Rs 5,000. This is a very small price to pay compared to buying a new vehicle.

By installing this cheap device, older vehicles with BS-III and BS-IV engines can perform almost as cleanly as modern BS-VI vehicles. This allows old trucks to keep running safely without damaging the health of people living in busy cities.

Supporting India's Growing Infrastructure

India is rapidly expanding its roads and highways to improve travel and trade. He explained that the technology has passed its testing phase successfully. The government will not stop its vehicle scrapping program, but this new device will act as a helpful extra option to clean up our air faster.
