Pick any spot on Earth. If you dig straight down, through the very middle of the planet, and come out on the exact opposite side, that spot is called your antipode. It is the most distant point on the globe from where you started. Most of the time, we do not think much about what is happening on the other side of the world. However, recent events and scientific studies suggest that what happens down there might actually affect us right where we are, even across thousands of miles.
On August 10, a very strong earthquake hit Colombia. It was a magnitude 7.4. Just four days later, two more powerful earthquakes struck Indonesia. Interestingly, Indonesia is almost exactly the antipode of Colombia. Is this just a strange coincidence, or is something deeper going on beneath our feet? A group of scientists decided to check the data to find out.
The first big tremor hit San Jose del Palmar in Colombia. It happened at 6:04 pm on August 10 and was located 110 kilometers underground. Four and a half days later, a massive magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the seafloor near Flores Island in eastern Indonesia. This quake was deadly and caused a lot of damage, driving thousands of people from their homes and taking many lives. Just seven hours after that, another strong quake shook North Sumatra.
When we look at events closer to home, we know that one earthquake can easily trigger another. For example, Venezuela was hit twice in one day on June 24. A magnitude 7.2 quake tore the coast, and seconds later, a magnitude 7.5 broke the exact same fault line. Experts like Harold Tobin explained that when one part of the rock slips, it pushes the rock beside it. A crack that is already close to breaking gets the final push it needs to snap.
That local triggering makes a lot of sense. But what happens when the distance is 16,000 kilometers? Flores lies about 162 degrees around the globe from the Colombian epicentre, and Sumatra is at 170 degrees. On a global scale, 180 degrees is dead opposite. The far side of the planet is meant to be a very special place when huge seismic events happen.
