Tamil Nadu Equips Over 1,000 Police Stations with 18-Month CCTV Storage

Tamil Nadu is making big changes to how its police stations work. The state's top police officer, the Director General of Police (DGP), recently shared some important news with the Madras High Court. He said that 1,071 police stations out of 2,100 in the state now have special CCTV systems. These systems can save video recordings for up to 18 months.

In the past, keeping video footage for a long time was very hard because of a lack of storage space. Now, with better technology, more than half of the stations in the state have met this high standard.

Why Do Police Stations Need 18 Months of CCTV Footage?

The idea of keeping CCTV footage for 18 months did not come from nowhere. It comes from a direct order by the Supreme Court of India. The court wanted to protect the rights of common citizens. Sometimes, people accuse the police of bad behavior, lock-up violence, or unfair treatment inside police stations. To prove what really happened, clear video evidence is needed.

The Supreme Court ruled that 18 months is the right amount of time. This is because legal cases and complaints often take months to file. If the police delete the footage after a few days or weeks, the truth might be lost forever. By keeping the files safe for a year and a half, the court can easily ask for the video to see the truth.

But upgrading thousands of police stations is not an easy job. It requires a lot of planning and money. While the central government manages massive budgets, as seen when the Rajya Sabha clears appropriation bill expenditure for public services, state governments also have to spend a lot of money locally to upgrade their security systems.

The Current Status in Tamil Nadu

The DGP told the Madras High Court that the work is moving forward quickly. Out of the 2,100 police stations in Tamil Nadu, 1,071 are now fully equipped with this long-term storage capability. The government is working hard to bring the remaining police stations up to speed. This project requires high-quality cameras, large hard drives, and steady power supplies so that the cameras never turn off.

There are many challenges in setting up these systems. In some rural areas, electricity can go out, and internet connections can be slow. The police department is using modern technology to make sure the cameras keep recording even during power cuts. They are also training staff to manage the computer systems that store this massive amount of data.
