During this meeting, they named senior MLA Arup Roy as the new chairperson. The rebel camp did not stop there. They also announced the suspension of Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the party. By creating a parallel organization, the rebels are trying to take control of both the legislative and organizational wings of the TMC. Why Are They Rebelling?

Ritabrata Banerjee explained that the party is currently in a "constitutional crisis." According to him, the party's national working committee was formed in February 2022 and its three-year term has expired. He claims that the committee should have been rebuilt according to the party rules, but it wasn't. Therefore, the rebels felt they had a legal right to start the process of rebuilding the national leadership themselves.

The newly formed committee is quite large, with 30 members. They have already appointed Arup Roy as the chairperson and selected several vice-chairpersons and general secretaries. They even plan to hire an independent auditor to check the party's financial records, which is a major move meant to gain public trust. Much like how professionals seek better business strategies to remain relevant, these rebels are using administrative arguments to build their case.

The Official TMC Response

The official camp, loyal to Mamata Banerjee, is not taking this threat seriously. Senior leader Kunal Ghosh called the entire event a "comedy show" and a "circus." He emphasized that the Trinamool Congress is synonymous with Mamata Banerjee and that all other claims are meaningless. The official party members believe these events are just a temporary distraction and that justice will be served in court.

It remains to be seen how this power struggle will affect the common people of West Bengal.
