Vijay Wants to Change the Coordinates of Power in Tamil Nadu: Why It Is Needed

Fort St George has a very long history. It was built a long time ago by a trading company. This company later took control of a huge part of the country. Now, almost four hundred years later, the Government of Tamil Nadu wants to leave this old fort behind. They are looking for a brand new home for the state government. This is a big step for the region, much like how modern planning projects are changing the map of India, such as the growth of the Jewar Airport, which aims to boost future travel and trade.

A Bold New Proposal for Tamil Nadu

Recently, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay spoke in the Legislative Assembly. He proposed that the state should not just change the leaders in power. He wants to change the permanent address of power itself. He announced plans for a new, big building complex. This new integrated Assembly and Secretariat complex in Chennai will be very large. It is designed to cover about 20 lakh square feet. It will cost around Rs 1,200 crore. Vijay says this new space will meet the administrative needs of Tamil Nadu for the next one hundred years.

The outsider who entered Fort St George is now saying the government should leave it permanently. Power has changed hands many times inside this old colonial building. Now, Vijay wants to move the whole center of government. Of course, this is still just a proposal. No land has been picked yet. There is no final blueprint, and no detailed plan has been checked by the public yet. Just like massive infrastructure plans—including strategic transport networks like the India 114 Rafale jets deal that require careful planning—this new government home must pass many tests.

From Trading Post to Political Heart

Fort St George started as a simple trading post on the coast. The English East India Company built it in the 1630s to protect their goods. Over time, that small trading post grew into a military base. The military base grew into a center for administration. Soon, the people who came to buy cloth and spices were writing the laws of the land.

When India got independence, the purpose of the fort changed. The British flag came down. Elected Indian leaders took over the old colonial offices. Congress leaders, and later great Dravidian leaders like CN Annadurai, M Karunanidhi, and J Jayalalithaa, ran the state from these very rooms. They used this colonial building to fight for social justice, regional identity, and the welfare of the people.

Why a New Home is Truly Needed

Fort St George is a priceless piece of history. But it is very tired in terms of administration. Tamil Nadu really needs a modern seat of government to handle today's challenges. Building a new complex is a job for engineers. But building a permanent home for a state government is a job for all political parties working together.

Moving out of the fort means much more than just packing up office desks. It marks a huge change in how the state is run. While it does not erase history, it turns a colonial stronghold into a museum piece. Tamil Nadu is ready for a new chapter, and changing the physical address of power might just be the right way to start it.
