Politics in Punjab is always full of big news and drama. Recently, a major event happened inside the Congress party. Former Chief Minister and current Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi decided to skip a key speech by Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha. Instead of sitting in Parliament, Channi traveled to Faridkot to lead a local protest rally. This decision has caused a lot of discussion about internal party disagreement in Punjab Congress.
Rahul Gandhi is the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. On Wednesday, he gave an important speech in Parliament. He attacked the BJP government over police action against student protesters at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Out of the seven Congress MPs from Punjab, six were present to support Rahul Gandhi. Channi was the only MP from the state who was missing during this big moment.
There was no official party whip issued to force MPs to attend the Lok Sabha session. However, Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla sent a WhatsApp message to all Congress MPs from Punjab. Aujla is the head of the Congress parliamentary group for Punjab. He asked all MPs to be present in the Lok Sabha from 12 pm onwards. Rahul Gandhi began his speech around 1 pm.
Even though the message was sent to everyone, Channi chose not to attend the Parliament session. Instead, he went to Faridkot to stand with local party leaders. His absence immediately got noticed by political experts and media outlets across the country.
So, why was Channi in Faridkot? He was leading a major Congress dharna outside Baba Farid University. The protest was about the controversy surrounding the Pharmacy Officer recruitment exam. The Punjab Police recently claimed to have caught a large cheating racket involved in this exam. Channi and his team demanded answers and action against the guilty people.
The protest was organized by former Congress MLA Kushaldeep Singh 'Kikki' Dhillon. Dhillon is a close ally of Channi. Many other senior Congress leaders also joined this protest. These leaders included Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjit Singh, Fatehgarh Churian MLA Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, and Gurdaspur MLA Barindermeet Singh Pahra. Former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu and former MP Mohammad Sadique were also present at the event.
This event has brought out the strong internal fighting inside Punjab Congress into the open. Right now, there seems to be a power struggle between Charanjit Singh Channi and Punjab Congress President Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. Many of the leaders who joined Channi in Faridkot are actively supporting him in his attempt to replace Raja Warring as state party chief.
On the other hand, leaders loyal to Raja Warring stayed away from the Faridkot protest. For instance, district Congress president Navdeep Singh Babbu Brar was not present. The local district unit had planned a separate protest for July 31, but it was postponed after talks with state party leaders. This division shows that the party is clearly split into two camps.
Political tension in Punjab is rising not just inside political parties, but also on the streets. Issues of governance, safety, and youth concerns are constantly in the headlines, much like recent news about shocking violence at Chandigarh nightclub where students faced dangerous attacks. People in Punjab are paying close attention to how leaders address safety and public problems.
There’s more to life than simply increasing its speed.

Leaders who support Channi say that people should not read too much into his absence from Parliament. Speaking to the media, a leader close to Channi explained that the Faridkot protest was planned well in advance. They argued that the pharmacy paper leak is a massive issue in Punjab that affects many young job seekers.
The supporter also took a direct jab at Raja Warring. The leader said that Raja Warring should stop spending time sitting in Parliament and instead come to Punjab to lead protests on the ground like Channi is doing. According to Channi's group, holding the governing Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accountable in Punjab is more important than sitting in Delhi.
Meanwhile, Raja Warring was not silent either. While Channi was protesting in Faridkot, Warring led a protest inside the Parliament complex in Delhi. He was joined by Congress MPs Gurjit Singh Aujla, Amar Singh, and Dharamvira Gandhi.
They raised slogans against the Punjab AAP government over paper leaks. They demanded the resignation of Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains. So while both groups were protesting the same issue of paper leaks, they chose to do it at different locations and under different leadership.
Because of this growing conflict, the Congress central leadership is taking action. AICC general secretary in-charge for Punjab, Bhupesh Baghel, is starting a 10-day tour of the state. This is his second visit to Punjab this month, which shows how serious the situation is.
Baghel will visit several Assembly constituencies, mostly in the Malwa region. His schedule includes visits to Fatehgarh Sahib, Mohali, Patiala, Sangrur, Barnala, Mansa, Bathinda, Muktsar, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Moga, Faridkot, Ludhiana, Malerkotla, Khanna, SBS Nagar, and Rupnagar. His goal is to meet local leaders, heal divisions, and bring unity back to the party ahead of upcoming political challenges.
The decision of Charanjit Singh Channi to skip Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha speech has made the division in Punjab Congress very clear. While Channi's team argues that local state issues like exam leaks are more urgent, the group loyal to Raja Warring believes party discipline and national unity are vital. Just as citizens follow global political intrigue like the Trump-Iran trade mystery, political observers in India will closely watch how Bhupesh Baghel's tour helps resolve these internal conflicts in Punjab Congress.
