Tragic Landslide in Khandala: One Guard Killed, Search Continues for Missing Person

Heavy monsoon rains bring beautiful green views to the hills of Maharashtra. However, these heavy rains also bring great danger to the people living there. A very sad event happened on Monday night in the famous hill station of Khandala in Pune district. A massive landslide hit a residential area, destroying a security cabin. This sudden disaster took the life of a security guard and left another person trapped under heavy rocks and mud.

The Sad Incident at Rustic Highland Society

The landslide happened late on Monday night at the Rustic Highland Society. This residential area is located on Old Khandala Road. Because of the heavy rains, a large part of the hill slid down quickly. Tons of soil and heavy rocks came crashing down onto the society. It struck the security cabin where the guards on duty were staying.

The police identified the security guard who lost his life as Gangaram Puttepu, who was 40 years old. Another person, identified as Pramod Shantaram Prajapati, is feared trapped under the debris. Right after the landslide happened, emergency rescue teams rushed to the spot. Fortunately, rescue workers were able to move 14 other people to safety very quickly before more mud could slide down.

Rescue Teams Search the Debris

The rescue operation was not easy because of the continuous heavy rain and the threat of more landslides. Teams from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), local volunteers, and police officers worked together. They used heavy machines and manual tools to clear the rocks and mud.

On Tuesday afternoon around 5:00 PM, the rescuers found the body of Gangaram Puttepu. Due to low light and dangerous conditions, the search was stopped on Tuesday night. The rescue teams began their search again on Wednesday morning to find the missing person, Pramod Shantaram Prajapati. Everyone in the community is praying for a miracle, though the situation remains very critical.

More Landslide Damage in Pune District

This was not the only tragedy in the region. The heavy rains have caused multiple landslides in Pune district. In the early hours of Monday, another landslide hit Patan village near Lohagad Fort in Maval. A house was completely buried under the mud. Sadly, three members of a single family died in this incident. A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) recovered their bodies on Monday afternoon.
