India Calls for the Release of 188 Fishermen and Prisoners Held in Pakistan

The government of India has recently made a formal request to Pakistan. They are asking for the quick release and return of 188 Indian citizens who are currently being held in Pakistani jails. These people include fishermen and other civil prisoners who have already finished their jail sentences. It is time for them to go home to their families.

Why This Matters for Families

For many years, India and Pakistan have exchanged lists of prisoners. This happens twice a year, on January 1 and July 1. This system comes from a 2008 agreement between the two nations. These exchanges are important for tracking people who are lost across borders. The Process of Consular Access

There is also a need for better access to these people. India has asked Pakistan to give immediate help and contact (consular access) to 13 prisoners. India believes these 13 people are Indian, but they have not been allowed to speak with their own country’s representatives yet.
