Official Collaborative Announcement from OpenAI and Microsoft

Hey everyone, welcome back to the blog! If you have been following the wild and fast-paced world of Artificial Intelligence lately, you know that things change in the blink of an eye. Rumors fly around, new partnerships are formed, and sometimes, it can be really hard to keep track of who is working with who.

Well, today we have a massive update to talk about. On February 27, 2026, two of the absolute biggest players in the AI world Microsoft and OpenAI dropped a brand new joint statement.

Why did they do this? Because the internet has been buzzing with questions. OpenAI just announced some major new funding and a brand-new partnership with Amazon. Naturally, everyone immediately started wondering: Wait, are Microsoft and OpenAI breaking up? Is Microsoft getting left behind?

To put all those rumors to rest, both companies came together to release an official update. I have read through the entire document, and I am going to break it down for you right here, point by point, in plain English. No confusing tech jargon, just the facts on what this means for the future of AI. Let’s dive right in!

A Little Trip Down Memory Lane

Before we get into the new stuff, the statement starts by reminding us just how far back these two companies go. Microsoft and OpenAI have been working together since 2019. Think about that for a second! In AI years, 2019 feels like a completely different century.

What started as a simple research partnership has blossomed into one of the most important and massive collaborations in the history of technology. Their relationship is built on deep mutual trust, serious technical integration (meaning their systems are super connected), and a long-term promise to keep innovating.

The Elephant in the Room: The Amazon Deal

So, why release this statement now? As the AI industry grows, investments and partnerships get a lot of attention. Today, OpenAI announced some major new funding and some new partners most notably, Amazon.

When people saw the name Amazon, they panicked. But Microsoft and OpenAI want to make one thing crystal clear: Nothing about today’s announcements changes the terms of the Microsoft and OpenAI relationship.

Everything they agreed upon and shared with the public back in their joint blog post in October 2024 is still exactly the same. They just wanted to make sure everyone understood the full context so nobody gets the wrong idea.

Breaking Down the 7 Major Takeaways

To make sure there is zero confusion, Microsoft and OpenAI laid out the exact details of how their partnership is moving forward. Here is everything you need to know, without a single detail left out:

1. The Core Partnership is Still Rock Solid

First and foremost, the partnership remains strong and central to both companies. Microsoft and OpenAI are not drifting apart. They are going to continue working very closely together on everything from early research to engineering, and all the way to final product development. They have shared a lot of success over the years, and they plan to keep building on that foundation.

2. The Intellectual Property (IP) Rules Haven't Changed

When it comes to the actual brains behind the AI the intellectual property and the models the relationship is unchanged. Microsoft still holds its exclusive license and gets special access to OpenAI’s models and products.

But what about that new Amazon deal? The statement explicitly says that collaborations like the one between OpenAI and Amazon were always expected and planned for under their original agreements. Microsoft isn't mad about it. in fact, they stated they are excited to see what OpenAI and Amazon build together! It’s all about growing the AI ecosystem.

3. The Money Split is the Same

Let's talk about the business side of things. The commercial and revenue-sharing relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI remains exactly as it was. The ongoing arrangement where they share profits is unchanged. Interestingly, this agreement has always included rules about sharing revenue from partnerships that OpenAI makes with other cloud providers. So, the financial setup was built to handle OpenAI branching out.

4. Azure is Still the King of Stateless APIs

If you are a developer, this is a big one. Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform remains the exclusive cloud provider for stateless OpenAI APIs.

There’s more to life than simply increasing its speed.

If you don't know what a stateless API is, think of it like a vending machine. You put your request in, the AI gives you an answer, and then it immediately forgets you. It doesn't save your personal data or remember the conversation. Microsoft is the only cloud provider for these specific APIs that give access to OpenAI’s models and IP.

You can buy these from Microsoft or directly from OpenAI. Customers love this because they get to use Azure’s incredible global security and massive infrastructure. And here is the kicker. Even if OpenAI does something with a third party yes, including Amazon any of those stateless API calls that happen in the background will still be hosted on Microsoft Azure. Azure is basically the invisible engine running everything.

5. OpenAI’s Main Products Live on Azure

OpenAI’s very own first-party products will continue to be hosted on Azure. The statement specifically mentions Frontier, confirming that it, along with their other main tools, will stay exactly where they are on Microsoft's cloud. So, if you are a daily user, you won't notice any sudden shifts in how the programs run.

6. The AGI Rules Remain Untouched

AGI stands for Artificial General Intelligence. This is the holy grail of AI the moment an AI becomes as smart as, or smarter than, a human at almost any task.

In their contracts, Microsoft and OpenAI have very strict definitions of what AGI actually is, and a specific process for determining when they have officially reached it. The joint statement confirms that the definition of AGI, and the rulebook for deciding if it has been achieved, have not changed at all. They are still playing by the exact same futuristic rules.

7. Giving OpenAI Room to Grow (Hello, Stargate!)

Finally, the partnership is designed to support OpenAI’s massive growth. As OpenAI scales up, they need an unbelievable amount of computer power. Because of this, OpenAI continues to have the flexibility to commit to extra computing power from other places.

This includes large-scale infrastructure projects. The statement directly calls out the Stargate project, which is a massive initiative to build next-generation supercomputers. Microsoft and OpenAI designed their partnership to give each other the breathing room to chase new opportunities independently, while still holding hands on the big stuff.

What Does This All Mean For Us?

If I had to sum up this entire announcement, it would be this, Microsoft and OpenAI are in an open, but incredibly committed, relationship.

They remain deeply dedicated to the shared mission that brought them together in the first place back in 2019. They are going to keep working side-by-side to deliver the most powerful AI tools on the market. Furthermore, they are committed to advancing AI responsibly, ensuring that the incredible benefits of Artificial Intelligence reach everyday people and organizations all over the world.

So, if you saw the news about OpenAI and Amazon and thought Microsoft was getting pushed out, you can officially put those rumors to bed. The tech giants are just making room at the table for more innovation.
