A cloud of sadness and outrage hangs heavy over Manipur. We recently heard the heartbreaking news of a brutal ambush that claimed the lives of three church leaders. This act of violence has shocked many and deeply troubled efforts for peace in the region.
The attack happened on Wednesday morning. These dedicated leaders were traveling from Churachandpur to Kangpokpi. They were on their way back after a vital church leaders meeting.
The victims have been identified as Reverend V Sitlhou, Reverend Kaigoulen, and Pastor Paogoulen. They were all part of the Thadou Baptist Association. Their lives were cut short in a violent ambush between Kotjim and Kotlen in Kangpokpi. Police suspect militant groups are behind this terrible act. An investigation is currently underway to find out exactly who is responsible. However, Kuki community organisations have alleged the involvement of the armed Naga group Zeliangrong United Front.

What makes this tragedy even more painful is the background of one of the deceased. Reverend Vumthang Sitlhou, who had also served as the General Secretary of the Manipur Baptist Convention, was a true champion of peace. He had recently started important reconciliation meetings. These meetings aimed to bring together Kukis and Nagas in Kohima. His goal was to ease the rising tensions between these communities. Imagine a person dedicated to building bridges and fostering understanding. Then, they become a victim of the very violence they tried to stop. This is the profound heartbreak felt by many across the region.
The Kuki Inpi Manipur shared their deep sorrow. They noted that during these meetings, Christian leaders discussed peaceful living and dialogue. They saw these as the only way forward amidst growing tensions.

To attack such a man and his fellow peacekeepers is truly enraging. It feels like a direct strike against the very idea of peace itself. It makes us question the true intentions behind such merciless violence. This ambush also raises serious questions about the timing. It happened when sincere peace initiatives were being encouraged. Church leaders and civil society groups were working hard to restore harmony between communities.
Manipur has been a place of ongoing conflict for several years now. The conflict between the state’s Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities has been continuing for three long years. This creates a challenging environment for everyone. On top of this, tensions between Manipur’s Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities have been high. This started in February this year in Ukhrul district and has been getting worse.

These complex situations make the work of peace advocates even more crucial. Their efforts to create dialogue are often the only hope for a better future. When such individuals are targeted, it sends a chilling message.
Leaders from outside Manipur have also spoken out. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio strongly condemned the killings. He called such barbaric violence against innocent lives unacceptable. He stressed that it has no place in any civilized society. While the Manipur government has yet to give an official response, the calls for justice are loud. The need for a thorough investigation is clear. Those responsible must be held accountable for their actions.
The legacy of leaders like Reverend V Sitlhou must live on. Their commitment to peace must inspire us all. We must continue to push for dialogue and understanding in the face of such adversity. This incident is a stark reminder of the fragile peace in Manipur. It underscores the urgent need for stability and security. It calls for all communities to come together and reject violence as a solution.
Let us honor the memory of the fallen church leaders by renewing our commitment to peace. Their sacrifice should not be in vain. Instead, it should fuel a stronger resolve to build a harmonious Manipur.
