BJP wins Bengal and NDA sweeps Assam while TVK rises in Tamil Nadu and UDF returns to Kerala

May 4, 2026, is a date that will go down in India's political history for a very long time. We just witnessed one of the most exciting, shocking, and historic election result days ever! The final results for four major states and one Union Territory (Puducherry) are officially out, and the political map of the country has seen some massive changes.

Whether you follow politics closely every day or just catch the big headlines, you simply cannot miss what happened today. We are talking about sweeping upsets, giant superstar debuts, and historic comebacks. Let's break down all the incredible details from West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry in the simplest way possible. No confusing jargon just the big stories of the day. Grab a cup of coffee, and let's dive right in!

The Saffron Surge: BJP Conquers West Bengal

Let's start with the biggest headline of them all. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has finally achieved its ultimate, long-standing dream in West Bengal. For 15 long years, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress (TMC) held the state like an unbreakable fortress. But today, that fortress was decisively breached. The BJP comfortably crossed the majority mark in the 294-member State Assembly, paving the way to form its very first government in West Bengal.

The most shocking news? Mamata Banerjee actually lost her own high-profile seat in Bhabanipur! She was defeated by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, which is a massive political setback for her. Let's look at the exact numbers, Adhikari won by a solid margin of 15,105 votes. He secured 73,917 votes, while the outgoing Chief Minister only managed to get 58,812 votes. The TMC was trounced significantly, marking one of its worst performances in recent years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was absolutely thrilled. Soon after the results became clear, an exuberant PM Modi arrived at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi. Dressed festively in a traditional Bengali-style dhoti, he called the victory a big mandate for good governance and change. "Our mantra is nagrik devobhava (the citizen is God)," PM Modi told the party workers. "We are dedicated to serving the people. That is why the people have shown their faith in the BJP."

He also gave a very important message about changing the political vibe in Bengal. He said the state has now been freed from fear and urged all parties to move beyond violence. He powerfully stated, "Today, when the BJP has won, the talk should not be of revenge, but of change; not of fear, but of the future."

The Prime Minister proudly declared that the BJP's lotus symbol has now bloomed everywhere from "Gangotri to Ganga Sagar," pointing out that there are now BJP-NDA governments in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and finally, West Bengal.

Interestingly, PM Modi also shared why he thinks the opposition failed here and in other states. He connected the massive setback to the Women's Reservation Bill passed in Parliament last month. He said that anti-women parties tried to stop the amendment to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. "Today, sisters and daughters have punished the Congress, TMC, and DMK," he proudly noted.

So, what did Mamata Banerjee have to say about this? Leaving the counting centre in Bhabanipur, she looked visibly upset. She called the BJP's sweeping win immoral and openly alleged that the mandate in more than 100 constituencies had been looted by the ruling party. Despite the painful defeat, she bravely promised her supporters that her party would bounce back from this setback.

A Superstar's Debut: Vijay and TVK Shock Tamil Nadu

Moving down to the south, Tamil Nadu gave us a total movie-like climax! Superstar Vijay made a stunning debut in real-life politics, and what an entry it was. Rising as a major new force, his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), created a record in the electoral history of the state by becoming the single largest party.

According to Election Commission trends, TVK is leading or winning in nearly 107 out of 234 seats, putting them right near the magic majority mark. The ruling DMK was pushed down to a distant second place, and the AIADMK-BJP alliance trailed even further behind in the third spot.

Vijay didn't just lead his party to a win, he proved his own undeniable popularity on the ground. He contested from two constituencies and won both with flying colors! In Tiruchirapalli East, he scored a decisive victory with 91,381 votes, beating his closest rival by 27,416 votes. His win in Perambur was even more emphatic, where his lead brought him a massive winning margin of 53,715 votes.

There’s more to life than simply increasing its speed.

But wait, here is the absolute jaw-dropper from Tamil Nadu: DMK chief and current Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was defeated in a closely watched contest! TVK's V.S. Babu, a former DMK legislator who joined Vijay's team just this February, pulled off this giant upset. Babu secured a victory margin of 8,795 votes. He polled 82,997 votes, while Stalin finished with 74,202 votes. AIADMK candidate P. Santhana Krishnan was left way behind with only 18,430 votes. It truly is a new dawn in Tamil politics!

The UDF Comeback and the End of the Left in Kerala

Now, let's talk about Kerala, which witnessed a very sharp political churn on Monday. After a heavy defeat five years ago, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) pulled off a striking comeback. Voters decided to oust the last remaining Left government in the entire country, paving the way for the UDF to return to power after a long ten-year gap.

The numbers are huge. The UDF grabbed an incredible 99 to 102 seats out of the total 140 Assembly seats. On the flip side, the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) saw their numbers completely crash, falling from 94 seats down to a mere 35 seats.

Another major update here is that the BJP finally ended its prolonged electoral drought in the state! They registered their best-ever performance in Kerala by winning three solid seats.

Following the bitter results, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan immediately tendered his resignation, which was accepted by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. It was a terribly tough election for the ruling cabinet. Out of the 21 members of the outgoing Cabinet, only seven managed to retain their seats! The lucky seven who survived the wave were Pinarayi Vijayan himself, PA Mohamed Riyas, K Rajan, GR Anil, KN Balagopal, P Prasad, and Saji Cherian.

Hat-Trick in Assam and NDA Holds Puducherry

Up in the Northeast, the BJP showed absolute dominance in Assam by completing a fantastic electoral hat-trick. They put on a commanding performance! The NDA easily crossed the majority mark of 64, bagging a total of 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly.

Breaking it down, the BJP secured 82 seats on its own, while its solid allies held their ground nicely. Both the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won 10 seats each.

The Congress-led INDIA bloc was left completely in the dust, falling far behind. The Congress suffered a major setback, managing to win just 19 seats, while its ally, Raijor Dal, got just 2 seats, bringing the alliance's total to a very low 21 seats.

Lastly, over in the Union Territory of Puducherry, things stayed pretty stable. The NDA successfully retained its control, with the All India NR Congress leading the charge for their alliance's total tally.

So, there you have it! May 4, 2026, delivered plenty of drama, shocking defeats, and historic new beginnings. What a roller coaster of an election day!
