Welcome back, race fans! The F1 2026 season has officially kicked off, and what a wild ride the very first race was. If you missed the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park on Sunday, March 8, don't worry I've got you covered with all the exciting details.
The biggest takeaway from the weekend? Mercedes is back on top, and Ferrari has some serious homework to do when it comes to their race strategy. George Russell took home the big win, and he was absolutely thrilled. Right at the end of the race, he told his team over the radio, "I love this car." And honestly, after seeing him claim the checkered flag, it is very easy to see why! Mercedes even managed to get a perfect one-two finish, with Kimi Antonelli taking the second spot.
But how did we get to this point? Let’s break down the whole race, step by step.
Before the race even officially started, there was massive drama. Imagine getting ready for your home race, and then disaster strikes. That is exactly what happened to McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. He actually crashed his car into the wall while he was just on his way to the track! It was a tough break for him, completely ruining his day before the starting lights even went out.
Once the five red lights finally went out to start the race, Ferrari looked like they were the team to beat. They had the best possible start. Charles Leclerc jumped right into the lead, and his new teammate, Lewis Hamilton, moved quickly into third place.
The new F1 rules for the 2026 season promised to give us more exciting racing, and boy, did they deliver right away! The first nine laps were pure action. George Russell and Charles Leclerc went back and forth, swapping the lead almost five times. It was awesome to watch. Eventually, Russell's tires started to fade, which allowed the Ferrari driver to overtake him and hold the lead.
Further back in the pack, there were some amazing stories unfolding. Arvid Lindblad was racing in his very first Formula 1 Grand Prix. Usually, rookies are nervous, but he showed zero fear. He expertly moved his car right into the fourth spot early on.
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen had a mountain to climb. He started the race all the way back in 20th place. But, being the champion he is, he fought his way up to ninth place early in the race. However, his Red Bull teammate, Isack Hadjar, was not having a good day at all. He kept dropping down the pack and sadly had to stop his car completely on Lap 12.
Hadjar stopping his car is where the race completely flipped. Because his car was stuck, the officials called for a Virtual Safety Car (VSC). This is usually the perfect time to bring your drivers into the pits for fresh tires.
Mercedes understood the assignment, but Ferrari totally missed the mark. Ferrari decided to keep both Leclerc and Hamilton out on the track. Lewis Hamilton was not happy about this choice at all and complained to the team over the radio.
There’s more to life than simply increasing its speed.

Then, Ferrari got a lucky second chance! Valtteri Bottas had to stop his Cadillac, causing another Virtual Safety Car. Surely Ferrari would pit now, right? Wrong. Once again, Leclerc and Hamilton stayed out. This mistake cost them dearly. Because of this mix-up, George Russell easily caught up to Hamilton. By the time Leclerc finally went into the pits on Lap 29, Russell zoomed right past and took the lead of the race.
By Lap 40, the Ferraris finally started to find their speed again, but it was too little, too late. Russell and Antonelli used the power of their Mercedes cars to keep them safely behind. By Lap 50, Hamilton was actually getting faster than his teammate Leclerc, who was sitting in third place.
While the leaders were settling their spots, there was a super exciting battle for fifth place. Reigning World Champion Lando Norris in his McLaren was fighting tooth and nail against Max Verstappen. In the end, Norris managed to fend off the challenge, pushing the Red Bull star into sixth place.
After the race, Charles Leclerc admitted that Ferrari messed up and that Mercedes simply had too much power. He said, "It looked like Mercedes had a bit more pace than us today, but maybe not as much as what we saw yesterday, so that's a good thing but I don't think we could have won."
Here is exactly how the top ten drivers finished the race:
With Russell taking the early lead in the driver's championship, the action is going to be intense this year. The teams will now pack up and head to China for the Chinese Grand Prix on March 15. I can't wait to see if Ferrari can bounce back or if Mercedes will keep running away with it!
Let me know in the comments who you think will win the next race!
