Delhi air quality hits 428 forcing the return of maximum GRAP 4 restrictions

The familiar, heavy blanket of smog has once again descended upon Delhi. Residents are facing a critical air quality crisis as the city's Air Quality Index (AQI) alarmingly spiked to 428 on Saturday evening, pushing the capital deep into the 'Severe Plus' category.

This drastic downturn in air quality has forced the authorities to take immediate and decisive action. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has re-implemented the final and most stringent set of measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) – Stage IV.

What Caused This Sudden Spike?

According to officials, this severe deterioration is the result of a perfect storm of highly unfavourable meteorological conditions. A combination of a western disturbance, coupled with weak wind speeds, has trapped pollutants in the air, preventing their dispersal and causing the AQI to climb rapidly from 405 at 4 pm to a hazardous 428 by 8 pm.

What Does GRAP-4 Means for Delhi?

The implementation of GRAP Stage IV means the city is now under its highest level of pollution-related restrictions. These measures are designed to curb further emissions and prevent the situation from worsening. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:

  • Complete Ban on Construction: All construction and demolition activities across Delhi-NCR have been brought to an immediate halt (except for essential projects).
  • Schools Shift to Hybrid Mode: To protect young children from exposure to hazardous air, all educational institutions have been directed to switch to hybrid or online learning for classes up to Class 5.
  • Strict Vehicle Restrictions: The entry of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers into Delhi is now banned. If you own one of these vehicles, you will not be able to drive it in the city until the restrictions are lifted.
  • Industrial Activities Halted: All stone crushers, mining operations, and related industrial activities throughout the NCR will remain closed.

These Stage IV curbs are in addition to the restrictions already in place under Stages I, II, and III of GRAP.

There’s more to life than simply increasing its speed.

Your Daily Life Will Be Affected

For the average citizen, these measures will have a noticeable impact. Parents will need to adjust to online classes for their younger children, and commuters will need to double-check their vehicle's compliance before hitting the road. The goal is drastic, but the situation demands it.

Authorities are continuously monitoring the air quality and have assured that further steps may be taken depending on how the situation evolves.

For now, the message is clear: Delhi is in a public health emergency. It is crucial for everyone to take precautions wear masks, avoid outdoor activities as much as possible, and stay updated on the latest advisories.
