CITU Stages Protest Demanding Job Regularisation and Minimum Pay Scale for Workers

Members of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) have taken to the streets to raise their voices for working-class rights. Thousands of contract workers gathered to demand job regularisation and a fair minimum pay scale. The peaceful protest highlighted the deep struggles faced by temporary staff who work long hours without basic job security or equal benefits.

Why Contract Workers Are Protesting

Contract workers play a huge role in keeping government departments, public services, and private companies running every day. They work side by side with permanent employees doing the exact same jobs. However, they receive much lower salaries and very few workplace rights. Many of these workers have stayed in temporary roles for five, ten, or even fifteen years without any promotion or stability.

Due to rising prices for everyday items like food, healthcare, and education, living on small daily wages has become nearly impossible. CITU leaders stated that relying heavily on contract labor is unfair when workers dedicated so many years to their jobs. They insist that every hard-working person deserves job safety and dignity.

Key Demands Raised by CITU

During the rally, union leaders presented a clear list of demands to government officials and employers. The primary demand is the immediate regularisation of all long-serving contract staff into full-time permanent positions. Regular jobs provide stability that allows families to plan their futures, secure housing loans, and live without constant worry.

Another major request is establishing a strict minimum pay scale that reflects current living costs. Workers argue that equal work should mean equal pay. Currently, contract workers earn less than half of what permanent employees make for doing the same daily duties. The union wants the government to enforce strict wage laws across all sectors.

Social Impact and Workplace Welfare

Beyond basic salary increases, the protest emphasized social security benefits like healthcare coverage, provident funds, and paid leave. Female contract workers face even greater challenges due to lack of paid maternity leave and equal pay gaps. Supporting women workers and ensuring fairness fits into broader social goals like the International Women's Day theme give to gain, which highlights mutual support and economic equity for all community members.

When workers feel safe and valued, productivity increases across all sectors. On the other hand, chronic job stress and poor wages lead to mental fatigue and financial hardship. Union representatives stressed that fair treatment is not just an economic issue, but a fundamental legal and human right.

Legal Protection and Worker Safety

Contract workers often lack basic legal protection against sudden termination or harsh working conditions. Union leaders urged authorities to enforce existing labor laws strictly and protect workers from unfair treatment. Ensuring justice in public institutions is vital for public trust, just as keeping track of legal matters like a CBI custodial torture court order helps uphold justice across institutions.

CITU members warned that if their demands are ignored, they will launch larger nationwide demonstrations. They called on both state and central governments to form committees immediately to review worker conditions and finalize fair wage structures.

Looking Ahead to a Fair Future

The CITU protest has brought urgent attention to the plight of millions of temporary workers. As living costs continue to climb, governments and private employers must address the reasonable demands of their workforce. Providing regular job status and a reasonable minimum pay scale is a necessary step toward building a healthy, balanced, and sustainable economy.
