Every year, the beautiful festival of Ganesh Chaturthi brings joy to millions of people. In Tirupati, this festival is celebrated with great energy and love. People bring home beautiful idols of Lord Ganesha, pray to them, and then immerse them in water. Vinayaka Sagar is one of the main lakes in Tirupati where these holy immersions take place. However, once the celebrations are over, a big problem remains. The lake gets filled with waste, plastic, and debris from the idols. To solve this, the local government has started a massive cleanliness drive.
During the festival, thousands of Ganesha idols are placed in water. While this is a holy tradition, it often leaves a heavy mark on nature. Many of these idols are made from Plaster of Paris (PoP). PoP does not dissolve easily in water. It stays at the bottom of the lake for a very long time. In addition to the idols, people leave behind plastic bags, flowers, food waste, and metal frames. This turns the beautiful Vinayaka Sagar lake into a very dirty place.

Local officers saw this problem and took quick action. They knew that if they left the waste in the water, it would smell bad and harm the local fish and plants. The dirty water can also seep into the ground, making the drinking water unsafe for the local people. Just like how pazhassi dam siltation disrupts drinking water treatment in other areas, dirtying a local lake like Vinayaka Sagar can ruin the water quality for everyone nearby. This is why cleaning the lake immediately is so important.
The Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) is leading this big cleaning task. They have sent many workers, boats, and heavy machines to the lake. The workers are working day and night to pull out the heavy remains of the idols. They are also picking up plastic bottles and floating flowers from the surface of the water.

Special boats with nets are being used to collect the small trash. Big cranes are helping to lift the heavy wooden frames and large clay structures from the deep parts of the lake. The workers are wearing safety gear to protect themselves. The local authorities have also set up special trash bins around the lake so that visitors do not throw more garbage into the water.
Water is life. Clean lakes and rivers are very important for our health and the environment. When we pollute our water bodies, we hurt ourselves. Cleanliness drives like the one in Tirupati show that we need to be more careful. We cannot enjoy our festivals if we destroy nature in the process.
There’s more to life than simply increasing its speed.

People are starting to speak up for their local environment, much like the movement to protect farmers rights against the Meghalaya cement project. When citizens stand up for their land and water, cities become cleaner and safer. The people of Tirupati are now learning that keeping the city clean is a shared duty. It is not just the job of the government, but also the duty of every citizen.
This cleanup drive is a good step, but the best solution is to stop the pollution before it starts. Many people are now talking about using eco-friendly Ganesha idols. These idols are made of pure clay and natural colors. They dissolve easily in water within a few hours and do not harm the fish or pollute the water.
The government is also encouraging people to use artificial water tanks for the immersion. This way, the main lakes like Vinayaka Sagar can stay clean and beautiful all year round. Schools and local groups are also teaching kids about the importance of protecting the environment during festivals.
The quick action by the Tirupati authorities is highly appreciated by the citizens. The lake is slowly returning to its beautiful state. This drive serves as a great reminder for all of us. We must celebrate our culture, but we must also respect mother earth. By choosing green options and helping in cleanup drives, we can make sure our cities stay beautiful for future generations.
