This action comes just before July 13, a date known in the region as Martyrs’ Day.

Iltija Mufti posted a video message online to show the current situation at their home. In the video, she is seen speaking to a police official, asking why their house has been locked down. She pointedly questioned the government’s frequent claims that normalcy has returned to Jammu and Kashmir. She asked people to look at the locks on their gates as a sign of the actual situation on the ground. Why July 13 Matters

July 13 is a historically significant day for the people of Kashmir. It marks the memory of 22 Kashmiri Muslims who were killed in 1931. These protesters were gathered outside the Srinagar central jail to support a man named Abdul Qadeer Khan. Khan was being tried for speaking out against the Maharaja. For many years, this day was marked by a public holiday and official commemorations. However, the situation has changed significantly since the special status of the region was removed in 2019.

A Pattern of Restrictions

This is not the first time political leaders have faced such restrictions on this day. Last year, several prominent figures, including Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, were also confined to their homes. The events often lead to standoffs between leaders and security forces. For example, last year, Omar Abdullah was blocked by security when he tried to visit the martyrs' cemetery, leading him to jump over a fence to pay his respects.
