The global snack market is facing a bit of a crisis. Here’s what’s going on:
When the big players can't deliver, the world starts looking for someone who can. And that’s where India enters the picture.
As the world's second-largest potato producer, India was perfectly positioned to step in. And we didn't just step in. we leaped!
According to a report by the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), India's export of processed potato products has skyrocketed. Get ready for this number. between the financial years 2022 and 2025, our exports shot up by a staggering 123%!

We are now sending delicious products like potato chips, frozen French fries, potato flakes, and starches to countries all over the globe, with about 80% of these exports heading to Europe.

Gujarat has transformed into a major hub for processing potatoes. The Deesa-Palanpur region in the Banaskantha district has become a 'potato powerhouse.' Farmers here aren't just growing regular potatoes. they are cultivating special 'processed-grade' potatoes that are perfect for making chips and fries.
The growth here is mind-blowing. In just two years, the area used for growing these special potatoes in districts like Banaskantha and Sabarkantha has expanded from 4,000 hectares to 37,000 hectares! This shows a massive shift in farming strategy, with farmers smartly adapting to global demand.
Today, about 40% of the potatoes grown in Gujarat are used for making processed products, while the other 60% are for everyday cooking.
This trend proves something incredibly important. Indian agriculture is no longer just about feeding our own country. It has evolved into a smart, profitable, and global business. Our farmers are not just growers. they are becoming key players in the international supply chain.
By understanding global needs and adapting quickly, India is building a reputation as a reliable and high-quality supplier.
So, the next time you're enjoying a bag of chips or a side of fries, take a moment to appreciate the journey they might have taken. There's a growing chance they started their life in a field in India, thanks to the hard work of our farmers and the country's rising status as the world's favourite snack basket.
