The History of the Kangaroo Route

In 1935, this journey took around two weeks. Passengers had to fly through Europe, stop in the Middle East, travel across India, go down through Southeast Asia, and finally land in Australia. By the 1950s, things got a bit faster. New jet planes cut the travel time down to 38 hours with eight stops. Later, the famous Boeing 747 made the trip even simpler. In 2018, Qantas made a major breakthrough by flying nonstop from Perth to London in 17 hours. But Perth is on the quiet west coast of Australia. Most of the country's population lives on the east coast, in cities like Sydney and Melbourne. That is why a direct flight to Sydney is the ultimate goal.

What is Project Sunrise?

Qantas calls this new mission "Project Sunrise." The name comes from the historical flights during World War II that stayed in the air so long they saw the sun rise twice. This project aims to connect Australia's east coast directly with big global cities like London and New York.

The flight from London to Sydney will cover about 17,000 kilometers. It will take around 22 hours in the air. This will officially make it one of the longest commercial flights in history. Currently, the longest nonstop flight is operated by Singapore Airlines, which takes about 19 hours.

The Science Behind the Flight

Why did it take so long for airlines to offer this flight? The simple answer is that normal planes could not carry enough fuel to fly that far. To solve this problem, Qantas ordered a special version of the Airbus A350-1000 plane.

This special plane will have extra fuel tanks, a higher weight limit for take-off, and new aerodynamic designs. Because fuel is very heavy, the plane must carry fewer passengers to stay light. While a standard Airbus A350 can hold over 300 people, this special flight will only carry 238 passengers. This means more room for everyone on board.
