Indian Railways has achieved another huge milestone. The country has officially started the trial run of its very first Vande Bharat freight train. During its first speed test, this new high-speed cargo train reached an impressive speed of 145 kmph. This is a massive step forward for parcel movement and logistics in India.
The trial run is currently taking place in the Kota Division of the West Central Railway zone. Indian Railways has planned testing for a full month to see how the train performs under different operating conditions. If everything goes as planned, this new train will make cargo delivery much faster, safer, and more reliable across the country.
Most people know the Vande Bharat name from the fast passenger trains running across India. However, this new train is built specifically for carrying goods and parcels instead of passengers. It is a 16-coach Freight EMU prototype train.
The train was designed and manufactured by the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory. The main goal of this project is to bring modern, time-bound parcel services to Indian Railways. Businesses often need to move valuable goods quickly. This new platform will help goods reach their destination much faster than traditional freight trains.
The official testing phase began on July 29, 2026. The Research Designs and Standards Organisation is leading these detailed technical trials. The prototype train arrived in the Kota Division directly from the ICF factory in Chennai to begin its high-speed tests.
On the very first day, the train left Kota station at 6:00 AM and headed towards Mahidpur Road. During this initial leg, it ran at a steady speed of 120 kmph. Later, on the section between Mahidpur Road and Bhawani Mandi, it was tested at speeds of 120 kmph and 135 kmph.
The biggest success came during the return trip from Mahidpur Road back to Kota. The train sped up and reached a maximum speed of 145 kmph. Station teams along the route provided continuous green signals so the train could run without stopping, ensuring a very smooth test run.
Saurabh Jain, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Kota Division, shared details about why this location was picked. The Kota-Nagda-Sawai Madhopur rail section is widely known as one of the best high-speed testing corridors in Indian Railways.
The Kota Division has strong track infrastructure, modern signaling systems, and very efficient daily operations. Because of these features, Kota has become a top choice for testing advanced rail technology and new train models in India. Jain noted that hosting this major trial proves Kota's high operational standards and technical reliability.
