Tragedy at IIT Mandi: Why Student Mental Health Needs Our Immediate Attention

A very sad event happened recently at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. A young PhD student named Gurpreet Singh was found dead in his rented room. This news has shocked the entire country and started many discussions. It shows us how academic stress can hurt young people. It is time for us to talk about the mental health of our students and how we can support them better.

What Happened to Gurpreet Singh?

Gurpreet Singh was a dedicated researcher living in a village near the IIT Mandi campus. On Monday, the results of his PhD comprehensive examination were announced around 4:30 PM. According to his family, the results were not what he had hoped for. This disappointing news made him very sad and stressed.

On Tuesday, Gurpreet did not go to his classes. His family and landlord tried to call him many times, but he did not answer. When they went to his room, the door was locked from the inside. Feeling worried, they called the local police. The police had to break the lock on the door to get inside. Sadly, they found Gurpreet hanging. He had already passed away.

The police and a team from the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory came to inspect the room. They did not find any suicide note or strange items. Currently, the police are waiting for the post-mortem report to know the exact cause of death. They are looking into all parts of this sad case to understand what happened.

The Heavy Burden of Academic Stress

This tragic loss shows the massive pressure that students face in higher education. Students in top institutes like IITs work very hard to get admission. Once they are inside, the pressure does not stop. They have to face tough exams, busy schedules, and high expectations from their families and society.

This pressure is not just limited to college students. Even school-level results can cause massive anxiety. For instance, studying the CHSE Odisha plus two results analysis shows how much importance we place on marks and performance from an early age. When students do not get the marks they expect, they often feel like they have failed in life. This feeling can lead to deep sadness and despair.

Why PhD Students Face Unique Challenges

Doing a PhD is very different from other college courses. It is a long journey that can take five years or more. Many PhD scholars feel lonely because they work alone on their research. They worry about whether their research will succeed, if they will get jobs, and if their professors will like their work.

There’s more to life than simply increasing its speed.

When an exam result like the comprehensive test goes wrong, it can feel like years of hard work have been wasted. Students often feel they have nowhere to go. This isolation can make their mental health problems much worse.

Institutions Must Protect Their Students

Colleges and universities must do more to help their students. They need to build a kind environment where failing an exam is not seen as the end of the world. Mental health counseling should be easy to reach for every student. Professors and staff should be trained to spot signs of depression and anxiety in their classes.

Protecting students from academic and emotional distress is a serious duty of the state and educational bodies. This need for safety and care is why the chief justice warns government against harassing students in different situations. We must ensure our campuses are safe zones where students feel supported, not pressured to their breaking point.

How We Can Support Each Other

We all have a role to play in stopping such tragedies. If you have friends or family members studying in colleges, check on them regularly. Do not just ask them about their marks or exams. Ask them how they are feeling. Let them know that their life is much more important than any test score.

If you are a student and you are feeling overwhelmed, please remember that you are not alone. There is always help available. Talk to your friends, family, or a professional counselor. One bad result cannot define your future or your worth. Let us work together to make our education system safer and kinder for everyone.
