Pune Municipal Corporation Imposes Rs 10,000 Fine for Water Wastage

Water is very important for all of us. Without water, life on Earth is not possible. Recently, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken a big step to save drinking water. The civic body has decided to impose a heavy fine of up to Rs 10,000 for wasting water. This new rule aims to make sure that the available water lasts until the next monsoon season. Cities across the country are facing similar infrastructure and resource management challenges, much like the discussions around the call grows louder for a new water tank in Thammanam Kochi.

Why is PMC Taking Strict Action?

Summer brings a lot of heat and very little rain. Because of this, water reservoirs often dry up. To tackle possible water scarcity, the Pune civic body wants every citizen to use water very carefully. Standing Committee Chairman Srinath Bhimale stated that the city needs to plan its water resources properly. If people waste drinking water, the municipal corporation will take strict legal action against them. Breaking the rules twice will lead to a fine, and a police case can be registered if someone breaks the rules for a third time.

New Rules for Vehicle Washing and Swimming Pools

Many public and private places use a lot of water every single day. Under the new guidelines, vehicle washing centres must remain closed during water cut periods. If any centre is caught operating, it will face a fine of Rs 10,000. However, centres that use private borewells or well water can work three days a week: Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Also, using clean drinking water for public and private swimming pools, as well as private gardens, is now totally banned. Similar strict planning and urban infrastructure updates are often seen in other major civic projects, such as the efforts highlighted in the GBA chief commissioner report on expedite Ejipura buffer road works.

Strict Rules for Construction and Builders

Construction work uses a huge amount of water. The PMC has made it very clear that builders cannot use municipal drinking water for building work, road work, or ready-mix concrete projects. Instead, they must use treated water from sewage treatment plants (STPs), borewells, or wells. Any builder or contractor who breaks this rule will have to pay a Rs 10,000 fine, and the civic body will also stop their construction work immediately.

There’s more to life than simply increasing its speed.

Penalties for Illegal Connections and Leaks

Apart from wastage, the PMC is also checking illegal water connections. If the authorities find an unauthorized pipe connection, they will cut it off right away and charge a fine of Rs 5,000. Furthermore, if a water tank overflows, the owner will pay a Rs 1,000 fine. If a water tanker leaks, the fine goes up to Rs 10,000. Housing societies are also asked to fix leaks quickly and use treated wastewater for gardening and toilet flushing.
