Pune on Alert: Khadakwasla Dam Nearing 80% Capacity

Heavy rainfall has finally returned to Pune, bringing much-needed relief but also causing serious safety concerns. The Khadakwasla Dam, which serves as a major water source for the city, is currently seeing a rapid rise in its water levels. As of early Tuesday morning, the dam had reached 62 percent of its total capacity. Due to continuous rain in the catchment areas, officials expect it to hit the 80 percent mark very soon.

Why is there an alert?

The district administration has issued a formal alert for all people living in low-lying areas near the Mutha river. When dams reach such high levels, water often needs to be released from the spillway to manage the pressure and keep the structure safe. Much like how Mumbai schools closed due to heavy monsoon rain, authorities in Pune are prioritizing the safety of citizens by asking them to stay away from the riverbed.

Officials have clearly stated that water could be released at any moment. Residents who have parked vehicles or kept livestock in the riverbed must move them to higher ground immediately. Following these instructions is crucial to avoid any accidents during this volatile weather period.

A Welcome Shift in Water Storage

Just a few weeks ago, Pune was facing a difficult situation. A delay in the monsoon had caused water levels to drop sharply, leading the Municipal Corporation to impose water cuts for residents. This was a challenging time, and many were worried about how the city would cope. Thankfully, the recent heavy rainfall has changed the scenario significantly. The total water storage across the four main dams—Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temvhar—has jumped from 3 TMC to nearly 7 TMC.

This increase provides some breathing room, though officials are still being cautious. Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram mentioned that they will review the situation after a week before deciding whether to lift the current water cuts. This careful approach is necessary to ensure that the city has enough supply for the coming months.
