Who is Balen Shah the popular Kathmandu mayor and now PM candidate for Nepal

Imagine if your favorite local hip-hop artist, someone who raps about real-life struggles and corrupt politicians, suddenly ran for office. Now, imagine him not just winning a local election, but actually becoming the frontrunner to be the Prime Minister of the entire country!

Sounds like the plot of a movie, right? Well, this is exactly what is happening in Nepal right now.

If you have been keeping up with global news, or if you just love a good underdog story, you need to know about Balen Shah. He is the former mayor of Kathmandu, an ex-rapper, and currently the man who is on the edge of completely changing Nepal’s political history.

Let’s dive deep into the fascinating story of Balen Shah, how he rose to power, and why his current run for Prime Minister is such a massive deal for the Himalayan nation.

From Hip-Hop Stages to City Hall

Long before he was wearing suits and giving political speeches, Balen Shah was known simply as Balen to his fans. He gained a lot of fame as an independent rapper. But he wasn’t just rapping about money or fame, his lyrics were powerful. He used his music to call out urban decay, failing systems, and political corruption. Naturally, this made him a huge hit with the youth of Nepal, who were tired of the same old promises from traditional politicians.

In 2022, Balen took a massive leap. He decided to run for the mayor of Kathmandu as an independent candidate. Nobody thought a rapper could take down the heavyweights of Nepali politics. But he shocked the entire government. He defeated candidates from the major, long-standing parties like the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML. Overnight, Balen became a symbol of anti-establishment feeling. He proved that you don't need a massive political machine behind you if the people truly believe in your message.

A Mayor Who Actually Got Things Done

It is one thing to win an election, but it is another thing to actually do the work. During his nearly four-year term as the mayor of Kathmandu, Balen rolled up his sleeves and focused on practical, everyday problems.

If you have ever visited Kathmandu, you might know that garbage disposal was a long-standing nightmare. Balen made waste management his top priority. He worked with private companies and the Ministry of Urban Development to finally clear out uncollected solid waste.

His administration didn't stop there. They improved road traffic, cleared out illegal structures on public lands, and replaced old, broken pathways with nice, standardized ones. He also put a lot of effort into restoring historical heritage sites and building clean, beautiful public parks.

Now, it wasn't always smooth sailing. Some of his tactics were seen as a bit aggressive. For example, he faced criticism for being heavy-handed when demolishing illegal buildings and relocating squatters who lived along the riverbanks. But newspapers noted his courage and integrity in tackling issues that older politicians were too scared to touch. By the end of his run, Kathmandu was noticeably cleaner and much more organized.

The Big Leap: Running for Prime Minister

Balen’s journey didn't stop at the mayor's office. On January 18th, he officially resigned as the mayor of Kathmandu to take an even bigger step, running in Nepal's general elections.

He joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). Through a special seven-point agreement with the party’s chair, Rabi Lamichhane, Balen became the party's official candidate for Prime Minister, while Lamichhane kept his role as the party leader.

And the gamble is paying off! As the vote counting continues, Balen is looking like the clear frontrunner. His party is leading in over 100 out of the 275 House of Representatives seats. To prove how serious he is, Balen isn't taking an easy route. He is directly fighting against the veteran leader and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in the eastern Jhapa-5 constituency. It’s a classic battle of the young, political newbie against the ultimate veteran.

Breaking the Mold: Why His Background Matters So Much

To truly understand why Balen’s rise is historic, we have to look at his background. Balen was born on April 27, 1990, in Naradevi, Kathmandu. This makes him a true millennial a massive break from the older, traditional leaders who usually run the country.

There’s more to life than simply increasing its speed.

But there is something even more important, his roots. Balen comes from the Madhesi community. The word Madhesh refers to the plains of southern Nepal that share a border with India. For a long time, Nepal’s politics have been dominated by hill-origin elites mostly from the Brahmin and Kshatriya communities. A Madhesi Prime Minister would completely break this dominance and mark a massive shift in how Nepal is run.

While his family originally comes from the Mahottari District in Madhesh Province before relocating to Kathmandu, Balen proudly embraces his culture. There was a little bit of drama during his rise regarding his last name old documents showed it as 'Sah' before it changed to 'Shah' but today, Balen Shah is simply the most popular name in the country. (Reports also claim he has Maithili Rajput origins!).

The Power of Identity and Connection

The Madhesi people make up about one-third of Nepal’s population. They primarily speak languages that are rooted across the border in India, like Maithili, Bhojpuri, Awadhi, and Hindi. Historically, this group has had to fight hard for basic political, economic, and bureaucratic representation through movements like the Madhesh Andolan. They have fought for dignity and equality for years.

Because of the geographic location, Madhesis share deep cultural and family ties with India. Back in 2020, India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh even highlighted these deep ties, calling the bond between India and Nepal a 'roti and beti' (food and family) relationship.

Balen knows how to connect with these roots. In his very first major political address as a PM candidate, he didn't speak in Kathmandu. He went to Janakpur, the capital of Madhesh province and the famous birthplace of Goddess Sita (also known as Janaki). He started his speech with "Sarvapratham, Mata Janaki lai pranaam" and spoke in Maithili, a language hugely popular in Bihar, Jharkhand, and the second most spoken language in Nepal. By honoring the local culture and promising to strengthen provincial systems, he completely won the crowd's hearts.

The Voice of Gen Z and Millennials

So, who is voting for Balen Shah? The simple answer: the youth.

Last September, massive Gen Z protests rocked Nepal. The younger generation was fed up with a short-lived social media ban, extreme frustration over corruption, and the painfully slow pace of change in their country. These protests actually helped bring down the previous government.

Balen emerged from this chaos as the perfect leader for the future. His campaign heavily focuses on empowering the youth, fighting corruption, and building a stronger federal system. Because he has already proven himself as a mayor who gets his hands dirty to fix problems, the youth believe he can do the same for the whole country. If he becomes PM, people are expecting serious anti-corruption drives and highly transparent, youth-focused policies.

Final Thoughts

Balen Shah’s story is a breath of fresh air. It is the story of a millennial hip-hop artist who looked at his city, saw it needed fixing, and did it himself. Now, he is standing at the door of the Prime Minister’s office, carrying the hopes of Gen Z, Millennials, and the historically marginalized Madhesi community.

Whether you follow politics or not, Balen’s journey is incredibly inspiring. It shows that with enough passion, courage, and connection to the people, anyone can rewrite history.
